Push-to-Talk (PTT)

Push-to-Talk (PTT) is the button or control used to activate the transmitter on a two-way radio. Pressing the PTT allows the user to speak, while releasing it returns the radio to receive mode.

PTT communication provides a simple and immediate way for users to communicate without dialling a number or establishing a conventional telephone call.

What is Push-to-Talk?

The PTT button controls when a radio transmits.

The basic process is:

Press PTT → Speak → Release PTT → Listen

When the PTT is pressed, the radio switches from receiving to transmitting. When the button is released, the radio returns to receiving.

Why is PTT used?

PTT is designed for fast, straightforward communication.

It is particularly useful where workers need to exchange short operational messages while carrying out their jobs.

PTT and two-way radios

Traditional two-way radios normally use PTT rather than requiring users to dial another radio.

PTT and half-duplex communication

Most conventional two-way radio communication is Half-Duplex.

This means users share the communication channel and normally cannot transmit simultaneously.

For example:

User A → speaks

User B → listens

The users then swap roles.

The PTT button controls this transmit-and-receive process.

PTT and full duplex

Full Duplex communication allows both sides to transmit and receive simultaneously, like a telephone conversation.

Traditional two-way radio PTT operation is normally half-duplex rather than full duplex.

Some specialised radio systems can provide telephone-style or full-duplex communication, but this is different from conventional PTT operation.

PTT and group communication

PTT is particularly effective for group calls.

A user can press the PTT and speak to everyone monitoring the same channel or Talkgroup.

All authorised members of the group can hear the transmission.

PTT and private calls

PTT can also be used during a Private Call between individual radio users.

The user selects the intended recipient and presses PTT to speak.

The communication process remains push-to-talk even though the call is between two individuals.

PTT and priority calls

Some professional radio systems allow Priority Call functionality.

Where supported, a priority communication can receive preferential treatment from the radio system.

The PTT itself does not create priority; the radio and network determine how the communication is handled.

PTT and emergency communication

Professional radios can use the PTT alongside dedicated emergency controls.

For example, an Emergency Button can initiate an emergency alert, while the PTT can subsequently be used for voice communication.

Emergency functionality varies between radio models and systems.

PTT and lone worker

A Lone Worker may use the PTT to maintain regular communication with a control room or other workers.

A compatible radio can also provide automatic or manually activated emergency functions if assistance is required.

PTT and Man Down

A radio equipped with Man Down functionality can automatically generate an alert if it detects a configured condition.

The PTT remains available for normal voice communication.

PTT controls on portable radios

On a Portable Radio, the PTT button is normally positioned on the side of the radio so it can be operated easily with one hand.

The button is generally designed to be easily identifiable by touch.

PTT controls on mobile radios

Vehicle-mounted Mobile Radios may have the PTT control on a connected microphone or handset.

This allows the driver or operator to transmit without reaching for the main radio unit.

Remote PTT

A Remote PTT control allows the user to transmit without pressing the main PTT button on the radio.

Remote PTT controls can be incorporated into:

PTT and speaker microphones

A remote Speaker Microphone can include its own PTT button.

The radio can remain attached to a belt or body-worn position while the user operates the PTT on the microphone.

Professional Headsets can include an integrated or remote PTT control.

This allows users to communicate while keeping the radio itself secured elsewhere on their clothing or equipment.

PTT and hands-free operation

Some radio systems support hands-free operation through compatible accessories.

In these cases, the user may not need to press the radio’s physical PTT for every transmission.

Voice-activated transmission, where supported, is often referred to as VOX (Voice Operated Exchange).

PTT and VOX

PTT and VOX provide two different ways of activating the transmitter.

PTT: The user presses a button to transmit.

VOX: The radio detects the user’s voice and automatically activates transmission.

PTT is generally more deliberate and can help reduce accidental transmissions.

PTT and Bluetooth

Some modern radios support Bluetooth accessories with wireless PTT controls.

This can allow users to operate the radio without a physical cable between the radio and the accessory.

The available functionality depends on the radio and accessory.

PTT and digital radio

PTT is used on both analogue and digital radio systems.

On digital systems such as Digital Mobile Radio (DMR), pressing PTT initiates the digital transmission process.

The radio system then handles the communication according to its configured channels, talkgroups and network architecture.

DMR radios use PTT for normal voice communication.

Compatible MOTOTRBO™ radios use PTT for voice communication.

PTT and repeaters

On a repeater-based radio system, pressing PTT causes the radio to transmit to the repeater.

The repeater then retransmits the signal to other users.

This can extend communication coverage significantly.

PTT and radio coverage

PTT does not increase the physical coverage of a radio.

The radio still requires sufficient signal strength and, where applicable, access to the radio network or repeater.

If the user is in a Dead Spot, pressing PTT may not result in a usable communication.

PTT and channel access

When the PTT is pressed, the radio checks whether it can transmit according to the system’s configuration.

On a Trunked Radio system, pressing PTT can cause the network to request an available communication resource.

The system can then assign the required resource according to its configuration and available capacity.

Push-to-Talk over Cellular (PoC) provides a push-to-talk user experience using cellular or IP networks.

The user still presses a PTT control, but the communication may be carried over a mobile-data or internet connection rather than a conventional radio frequency.

PTT and encryption

PTT itself does not provide encryption.

Where secure communication is required, compatible radio systems can use Encryption alongside PTT.

The PTT controls transmission; encryption protects the communication.

PTT and radio discipline

Good PTT technique is important on busy radio systems.
